High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilator (HFOV)

High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation is a life-saving ventilator mode used when conventional mechanical ventilation fails to maintain adequate oxygen saturation. HFOV delivers very small tidal volumes at extremely high frequencies to support gas exchange while protecting the lungs.

Indications

  • Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)
  • Pulmonary hemorrhage
  • Neonatal respiratory failure (Hyaline membrane disease, Meconium aspiration syndrome)
  • Air leak syndromes (e.g., pneumothorax, pulmonary emphysema)
  • Rescue therapy when conventional ventilation fails

Advantages

  • Lung-protective ventilation with reduced volutrauma
  • Improved alveolar recruitment
  • Reduced cyclic opening and closing of alveoli
