DR GOPAL PINGALI, MS, MCh, FRCS, completed his MBBS from NHL Municipal Medical College, Ahmedabad, in 1990. He obtained his MS (General Surgery) from Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. He received his surgical training at VS Hospital. He later trained in Paediatric Surgery from Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children, Mumbai, towards his MCh degree. Following his degree, he briefly worked at KEM Hospital as a lecturer. The University of Mumbai awarded him an MCh (Paediatric Surgery) degree in 1996.

He then worked for two years at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, UK, in the Department of Paediatric Surgery. While in the UK, he obtained his FRCS from the University of Glasgow in 1999. He returned to India in 1999 and has been practising ever since in Hanamkonda-Warangal. For a brief period from 2011 to 2014, he was an Assistant Professor of Paediatric Surgery at the Deccan College of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad.

He is well versed in day care surgeries like herniotomy, orchidopexy, circumcision, biopsies, branchial fistula surgery, Sistrunk’s operation for thyroglossal fistula, etc. He deals with accidents in the paediatric age group. He routinely deals with many paediatric urological cases like PUJ obstruction, vesicoureteral reflux, renal duplications, hypospadias, Wilm's tumour, etc. His major interest is neonatal surgery, which deals with congenital malformations like anorectal malformations, diaphragmatic hernias, intestinal obstructions, oesophageal atresias, lung malformations, myelomeningoceles, hydrocephalus, and so on. He has also operated on cases of biliary atresia (Kasai portoenterostomy). He is also adept at diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopic procedures. He has a large series on the hydrostatic reduction of intussusception in children.

He has presented at various national conferences, and his paper, Antenatal Anomalies – Maternal and Foetal Outcomes – A Paediatric Surgical Perspective in the Districts, won the best paper award in Mumbai in 2015. He actively participates in teaching the DNB students.

Apart from paediatric surgery, he is an avid reader and writer. He is the author of three books: From Here to the Stars, From the Stars to Here, and Decolonizing Bharat the Balu Way. The first two are a collection of short stories. He blogs at pingaligopi.in.
